Getting the email offer on Friday for a PR internship at Miami Swim Week starting the following Wednesday - I did not have time to form expectations. I was running frantic through my house attempting to find one of the only hotel reservations left for the week and packing clothes for a work week surrounded by some of the world’s most fashionable people. The preparation for this trip paralleled to the overall experience for me: hectic and rushed with everything being last minute and having very little instruction. This being my first experience in the fashion industry, I quickly realized that this is how the fashion world works and I loved every second of it.
When we got to the W South Beach where the shows would run for the week, we were immediately given one of three jobs for the day: running, working check-in, or helping manage in-house. I came to the conclusion on the first night that being in-house is where I wanted to be so I tried my hardest to offer my services to the in-house manager and be as assertive as I could. I ended up working in-house almost every day, where I was helping people getting seated and tackling the many issues that came along with that. At the Hot-As-Hell Show, which was my personal favorite, I was balancing expectations between my bosses, the fire marshals, and security guards, all while managing fashion crazed fans trying to steal front row seats. This job was stressful, but that’s what kept my adrenaline pumping, feeling like I just had three espresso shots. It’s also the job that allowed me to be face to face with the ever fabulous Rocky Barnes, as I helped her navigate into a completely full show to her front row seat. Needless to say, I woke up every morning more exhausted than the last, dabbing on more eye cream than usual.
Whether you’re working at Miami Swim or any Fashion Week, you have just entered a game of survival of the fittest. In my personal game the past week, I have learned a few tricks of the trade.
Following these steps is how any intern will make it out of this wild game alive and get the best experience out of interning at fashion week events in style. Happy hunting!
