If you had told me a couple of years ago that one day it would be cool to have tears in your shirt, I would have thought you were crazy. Yet here we are! It is Fall 2016 and hole-y T-shirts are all the rage. Whether it’s a loose V-neck or an old graphic, all different types of tees are making a statement. This trend can be dressed up with sleek leather leggings and suede booties or brought to a more casual level with a pair of boyfriend jeans and Birkenstocks. Funny thing is, high-end designers have been coming out with their own versions of this trend at prices higher than most shirts without holes. This has caught special attention from the media as well as older generations. I can just hear my dad now saying; “You paid how much money for jeans with rips in them?”
So why is it that we are so addicted to this odd trend? Probably because it’s undeniably really cool. Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian and Kristen Stewart have all been seen wearing them on many occasions. This trend takes street style to a whole other level. It is both edgy but also fascinating as yet another 90s grudge trend returns in stores.
One of the greatest supporters of this trend is Kanye West. His NYFW Yeezy line was full of sweaters and athletic wear with holes throughput the garments. His models marched out on the runway wearing minimal designs. Most of the garments were plain but used the rips/holes as the details. This gave his runway show a minimalist street style, very New York inspired.
