I think the thought of food makes most of us happy. When asked what my favorite foods are I'll most likely tell you dark chocolate and salmon. Weird, right? But these foods make me super happy. I thought my love for salmon was just me being unconventional but recently discovered that certain foods are scientifically proven to make you happy. I did some research and found a bunch of foods that can boost our serotonin and dopamine levels. So ditch the anti-depressants and try some of these:
Clams are packed with vitamin B12. Our brains need B12 to make dopamine and serotonin.
2. Walnuts and Flax Seeds
These nuts are loaded with alpha-linolenic acid, also known as ALA. Low levels of ALA have been linked to depression. Try sprinkling some walnuts on your salad or blending flax in your smoothies to give yourself an extra boost!
Bananas are a good source of B vitamin folate as well as tryptophan, a brain chemical that helps mood.
This grain contains a flavanoid called quercetin that has been shown to have anti-depressant affects.
This fish is packed with Omega-3 fatty acids that are proven to fight depression and insomnia.
Go for some dark chocolate next time you want to indulge. It's loaded with polyphenols that help boost your mood. In fact, one of them mimic the mood-bootsing effects of marijuana.
This fruit contains antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin which are linked to higher moods. It also contains vitamin B6 which has shown to reduce depression.
