Sleep is one of the most underrated elements of a healthy lifestyle. Getting the right amount of Zzz’s each night can help to prevent depression, spur creativity and even clear up your skin! Although sleep provides all of these life-improving benefits, most of us don’t do ourselves the favor of truly getting enough of it. With a hectic schedule, it can be hard to allocate enough time for sleep or to actually fall asleep with a million and one things on your mind. Here are a few tips that you may not have heard before to help you rest up!
Dim the lights!
Dimming your lights 30 minutes before you intend to fall asleep creates a calmer atmosphere in your room, preparing your body for slumber. Obviously, do not dim the lights while you’re trying to read or do
homework, but simply dim them as you pack up for the next day and get ready for bed.
Get a filtered screen!
Many times, you have probably heard that you should stop using your phone at least 20-30 minutes before you fall asleep. This is true! But, how likely are you to commit to avoiding that one last Instagram check before you fall asleep? Instead, invest in a UV filter screen protector that will reduce the strain on your eyes as you settle in for the night. Here is a link to my personal favorite, iLLumiSheild:
P.S. Yes, I know it’s 2017 and that iPhone now offers the “night shift” feature, but the UV filter screen protector will help with glare, even when it’s not nighttime!
Take a bath!
Taking a warm bath close to bedtime will relax your muscles and your mind in order to ensure your Zzz’s are high quality. Don’t worry, a shower works too! A lot of people prefer to shower in the morning, but this is just a quick 5-10 minute bath or shower in order to calm your body down after a long day.
Write it out!
This tip is the one that I have found most helpful, personally.Taking 15 minutes right before bed to vent about your day, in a journal, clears your mind so effectively. Instead of tossing and turning at night with thoughts clogging your mind, writing them out helps to relieve stress and release tension. Even if you just write down the things you have to do the next day, it erases one more item from your busy brain.
Maybe for you, doing all of these things each night is a little much and that’s just fine. Try one out tonight and if it works for you, stick with it. If not, choose a different one! Just remember, that with a busy life, comes a big demand for sleep!
