The month of September is among us, and that means four whole weeks of fashion packed excitement. I’m talking New York Fashion Week all the way to Paris people. Did someone say, “Très chic?” From the outside, Fashion week seems like an upscale, chaotic series of events that produces impressive street-style photos, exposure for up and coming models, and front rows filled with celeberity eyes peeking through tinted black shades. Just to be clear, none of what was just listed is false (or faux for a more approprate choice of words). Fashion week does entail all of those things, but it’s so much more than that. It’s impossible to know all of the glamourous secrets behind these prestigious weeks without actually attending a show, but there are some in’s and out’s that every beginner in the industry should definitely know.
How Fashion Week Got Started:
• Milan: Milan’s fashion week, “settimana della moda”, was founded in 1958 by the National Chamber for Italian Fashion and they still lead majority of the shows today.
• Paris: Paris has two different forms of fashion weeks, the “haute couture” (high fashion) shows and “prêt-à-porter” (ready to wear) shows. Haute couture shows have been held in Paris since 1945, but
the French Fashion Federation first organized the shows that are seen today in 1973.
• London: London was the first to dub their series of fashion events as “Fashion Week” in 1984. The British Fashion council organized London’s first fashion week and they are still in charge of them today.
• New York: Fashion shows became organized into a specific time and location in 1993, but Fern Mallis.
These events, which are the closest form to the NYFW we have today, were known as “7th on sixth” because of their location. Through the years “7th on sixth” became sponsored by numerous companies such as IMG, Olympus, and the company that title sponsors the event today, Mercedes-Benz. The events are now named “Mercedes- Benz Fashion week.”
What Exactly Is Fashion Week
Fashion week is a semi-annual event, occurring in the Fall and Spring, that allows top designers and brands to showcase their latest work. Fashion week takes place in New York, London, Milan, and Paris (in that order). These events highlight the biggest trends for the upcoming seasons. Not to be confused, the Fall fashion week shows present styles for the Spring and Summer seasons, while the Spring shows put out styles for Fall and Winter.
Who Can Attend A Show
Scoring a seat to a fashion week show mainly depends on your connection to the industry. Getting a golden ticket into one of these eminent events normally means being a buyer, press, a celeb, a prominent industry editor, or notable fashion blogger. There are shows that are open to people who are not in the industry, however you still need tickets and those are hard to come across.
