Tallahassee's very own vintage store, Avant Garb, will soon offer shopper's an awesome 10th Anniversary sale! I had the pleasure of interviewing the inspiring Heather Wade, owner of Avant Garb, regarding her impressive success as both a store owner, buyer, and artist.
Your store has been a success for 10 years, that is a huge accomplishment, has your vision remained the same throughout the past decade or has it changed over time?
HW: We are celebrating the end of our 9th year/ start of our 10th year, and I must say my vision has always been steady! I started selling my hand crafted jewelry designs way back in the early 1990's. I would sell in coffee shops and other local retail shops as well. Frankly, I bring new designs in, but I also keep the classics as well! I suppose I am doing the same with my store.
What is your absolute favorite aspect of owning your own vintage store? Along with that, what do you find to be the biggest challenge?
HW: My favorite part of owning Avant-Garb is that it enables me to do what I love, my job is absolutely my passion with out a doubt! The least favorite, and lets face it, you cannot have one with out the other. Maintaining such a long work schedule year after year can be draining!
What products do you sell most often? Do you see a trend amongst college students purchases?
HW: We sell a lot of accessories! Our college age customers have always LOVED our sunglasses selection, also our jewelry selection! And I think we do a very good job with keeping the ever changing trends fresh in our shop.
How do you find/shop for the products you sell in Avant-Garb? When you go on buying trips, how do you decide what to search for?
HW: We buy locally and worldwide as well. When I take trips, I am on the hunt for specific items that I know my customers are looking for! The latest has been vintage sterling Native American jewelry, I am very proud of our selection!
If you could offer one piece of advice for young, entrepreneurs interested in fashion, what would it be?
HW: My advice to young entrepreneurs would to treat every job / internship as a learning experience. You will succeed if you are professional and hard working.
Why do you personally believe Avant-Garb has been so successful for the past 10 years?
HW: Avant-Garb's success is simple, I am always working! On occasion, someone will walk into my shop and say, " must be nice to make your own hours" and my response is," in business, your hours make you! "
What can shoppers expect to see in your store when they come by for the 10th anniversary sale?
HW: We will announce the details of our sale the week of and I can assure all of my customers that ALL of their favorite items will be on sale!
