Fifty-two models, six outfit segments, and a 3 million-dollar Fantasy Bra later, lingerie enthusiasts (and those unhealthily obsessed with the models, cue myself) flipped their TV to the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, ready to binge eat, cry, and soak in the perfection. While there were some absolutely gorgeous looks on this year’s runway, I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed with the majority of the designs and the underwhelming Angel wings.
To commemorate this year’s show, I took the liberty of categorizing best looks, worst looks, and all together most outrageous looks:
PINK nation was the tackiest part of the show (and one of the gaudiest things I’ve ever seen), and I’ve been watching this since the seventh grade. Or maybe I should say it’s the gauziest thing I’ve ever seen, because there seemed to be a pattern of random, streamer looking things hanging off of the costumes. Adding onto this mess, most of the models walking this segment donned an ensemble of a million pink satin bows. It looked tragically cheap, the bows were overwhelming, and the whole look was just not up to the standards that previous VSFS had set.
It wasn’t all bad though, because truly there were some great moments. More often than not, there would be stunning costumes. Here’s my highlights:
The pinnacles of the fashion show were the Mountain Romance and Dark Angel pieces. “Dark Angel” was compromised of everything black and anything lacey, which I’m a sucker for. Every single model looked insane, and the clothing was so flattering and appropriate for the dark, romantic theme of the segment. On the opposite end of things, “Mountain Romance" was the complete antithesis of this, and included flirty, girly garments adorned with rhinestones and glittery lace. Martha Hunt’s outfit was my favorite in this one, mostly because I’m biased towards the color pink, but also because the quality of the costume was finally something I could see the designers curating in good faith.
Adriana Lima was put in one of the worst outfits (with wings that look like a shriveled version of what they should be), and still came out a show stopper. I have to say the same thing of Ming Xi, who people don’t usually pay attention to, but happened to kill it on the runway this year (despite her uneventful black lace outfit). And how can I not bring up Jasmine Tookes in the Fantasy Bra? She literally made that bra look good, and killed it with her walk.
A personal favorite look of mine was Maria Borges, who stunted her African themed garb with clean cut grace and pride. I’ve never seen someone look so confident in their own skin. Let’s also not forget Sara Sampino’s breathtaking gauzy black wings (the good kind of gauzy this time) that billowed behind her as she strut her way through the Weeknd’s performance in like six inch heels. I’m lucky if I make it an hour with heels on. Oh, and Bella looking extremely hot while her ex-boyfriend happened to be performing? Iconic.
I have high hopes for what’s to come in the future of Victoria’s Secret, and I will pray every night for the next year for more grandiose wingsnand a lot less um… plastic trench coats.
